A native of Washington County, Ind., Kimball served with Indiana regiments during the Mexican and Civil Wars, gaining the rank of major general. He was state treasurer from 1867 to 1871, and served in the Indiana General Assembly in 1873. In 1874 he moved to Utah and served as U.S. Surveyor and later postmaster of Ogden. William Worth Belknap was born in Newburgh, New York on September 22, 1829, the son of career soldier William G. Belknap and Anne (Clark) Belknap. Belknap's father had fought with distinction in the War of 1812, Florida War, and Mexican–American War. Belknap attended the local schools in Newburgh, and graduated from Princeton University in 1848.
